Habit
Medium-sized tree, 15-18 (25) m tall, 4-6 m wide; initially slenderly conical, gradually wider, very symmetrical; branches extended in layers to ascending, loose; slow-growing, 20-35 (40) cm a year; splendid conifer.
Fruits
Quickly forming crimson-violet cones up to 7 cm long.
Leaves
Late shoots; short, densely packed needles, shiny dark green, conspicuous bluish white stripes underneath; needles usually pointing forward and reflexed upwards, revealing the white undersides; impressive needles.
Demands
Prefer shade when young, later sun or light shade; cool, humid, sensitive to heat, usually frost hardy, but sensitive to snow pressure.
Soil
Fresh to moist, acidic or neutral, avoids chalk; well-drained, sandy-loamy.
Native habitat
Abies veitchii likes areas with little snow and is found alongside Betula ermanii, Pinus pumila, and wild varieties of Alnus and Sorbus; Cornus canadensis, and varieties of Carex and ferns found in the underplanting.
