Habit
Irregularly clump-like, in or above water, very rampant with far-creeping rhizomes or increases by seed.
Average size
Depending on water depth 20-50cm tall, inflorescences 80-150 cm tall.
Flowers
Above water, tiny, round, white to whitish-pink in large, loose panicles arranged in large layers, small flowers open from noon on; June to September; some seeds.
Leaves
Cordate to ovoid or lanceolate, pale green.
Demands
Sunny to slightly shady, likes warmth, frost hardy.
Soil
Swamp to flooded, stagnant or slowly flowing water 40 cm deep, not flowering below the surface, nutritious, mud, sandy or gravely loam, clay, also compacted.
Our tip
Water plantains are suitable for natural gardens. Their tendency to spread can be restricted by cutting the inflorescences back completely during flowering of the last flowers.
