Habit
Small tree, up to 10 m tall, broadly extended crown, slow-growing, forming extensive root balls.
Flowers
Dioecious, inconspicuous, yellowish to reddish, in short clusters of racemes directly on the stem and branches, summer to autumn.
Fruit
Pendent, flattened, brown-violet to dark brown carobs, 20 to 25 cm long, round, flat seeds, edible.
Leaves
Evergreen, small, in pinnate pairs, leathery, succulent, obovate, shiny dark green, reddish shoots.
Demands
Full sun, sheltered, temperate or cold house; tolerant of heat, drought and cutting.
Natural habitat
Well drained, sandy, nutritious to poor soil, acidic to alkaline.
Note
Not good in pots.
