Habit
Gnarled tree, 20 (25) tall, 5-10 m wide, upright, widely extended, forming large root balls.
Flowers
Inconspicuous, yellowish to greenish white, on 5-7 cm long, axial panicles, spring to summer.
Fruit
One-seed, small, black berries.
Leaves
Evergreen, leathery, smooth; thick veins, ovoid to lanceolate, shiny light green on top, pale blue-green underneath, soft and reddish shoots; up to 10 cm long, aromatic, strong fragrance of camphor when rubbed.
Demands
Sun to semi-shade, sensitive to frost, temperate or cold house, cut back hard after flowering or in spring when under glass.
Natural habitat
Fresh to moist, loamy, nutritious, well drained soil, avoid chalk.
