Habit
A bizarre shrub, 2-3 m tall and wide; twigs asymmetrically upright to horizontal, each with four wing-like cork strips; slow-growing.
Fruits
Reddish like those of spindle trees, orange seed husks, from the beginning of September, poisonous.
Flowers
Inconspicuous.
Leaves
Elliptical, dark green; shoots early in April, orange-red or bright carmine from September.
Roots
Dense and shallow; sensitive to compaction and mechanic injuries.
Demands
Sun and semi-shade, leaves also change colours well in light shade; sensitive to heat and drought; frost hardy.
Soil
All nutritious soil; acidic to alkaline.
