Pinaceae

(=A. nobilis 'Glauca') - (wild varieties; western North America)

Habit
Conspicuous, medium-sized tree, 15-18 (20) m tall, 4-6 m wide, habit asymmetrical to symmetrical, loosely conical, sometimes with multiple shoots; branches horizontal, not completely layered, branches down to the ground for a long time, shoots stiff, usually slow-growing, 25-40 cm a year, occasionally up to 80 cm.
Fruits
Young specimens already form 20 cm, decorative, cylindrical cones.
Leaves
Late shoots; intense bluish white needles, arching upright.
Demands
Sun to light shade, only powerful blue in full sunlight; cool, temperate, humid, frost hardy; avoids very windy areas.
Soil
Fresh to moist, acidic to slightly alkaline; nutritious, well-drained sandy-loamy or deep loamy, adaptable.
Native habitat
The blue types of Abies procera are found in the higher regions of the Rocky Mountains alongside varieties of Pinus, Gaultheria, Rhododendron, Vaccinium, numerous ferns and Cornus canadensis and Tiarella trifoliata. All of these varieties prefer cool, humid areas with acidic soil.
Our tip
The blue needles are most intense when these firs are not planted on too nutritious soil, but rather on moist, loamy, gravelly-sandy soil in full sunlight.
