Habit
A bushy shrub or small tree, 2-6 m tall, 1-2 m wide, branching just above the ground, spreading, slow-growing.
Flowers
White flowers, petals with red tips, waxy, bent back, up to 4 cm wide; dark red in heavy clusters, needle-like stamen extended far out; early summer to winter.
Fruit
Pear-shape, plum-like berries; green to red, refreshing, spicy and tart, tasting like guava and pineapple.
Leaves
Evergreen, almost succulent, thick, ovoid, leathery, up to 8 cm long, 4 cm wide, shiny dark green on top, white tomentose underneath.
Demands
Full sun, sensitive to frost, cold house, very tolerant of droughts between growth phases, considered the most frost hardy subtropical fruit.
Natural habitat
Humic, loose, well drained soil, tolerant of salt.
Our tip
Prune regularly; otherwise the plant thins out at the base. Also grow decoratively on trellises.
