Habit
Shrub, rarely a large shrub; 2-3 (4) m tall, 1.5-3 m wide, initially upright, then arching, shoots with strong, three-part thorns, medium to fast-growing.
Flowers
Yellow, in small panicles, May to June.
Fruits
Bluish black.
Leaves
Evergreen, more than 10 cm, lanceolate, leathery, medium to dark green on top, thorny on the margins, light green underneath.
Demands
Sun to semi-shade; moderately frost hardy; heals well if damaged; tolerant of urban and industrial pollution.
Soil
Fresh, well drained soil, tolerating drought somewhat, harsh droughts causing conspicuous pseudo autumn colours with bright red leaves; sensitive to soil compaction.
Note
Good for cutting, can form impenetrable hedge walls.
