The Ottowan barberries are hybrids of the European Berberis vulgaris and the Japanese B. thunbergii. The result is a remarkably strong-growing barberry; we sell only red-leaf types with especially intense colours.
Habit
Shrub, 2-2.5 m tall and wide; initially upright, later loosely arching, fast-growing.
Flowers
Plentiful, yellow with reddish hues.
Fruits
Ovoid, light red berries; edible.
Leaves
Exceptionally large leaves, 4-5 cm, broadly oval, shoots intense dark red, later greenish red, red hues from orange to scarlet in autumn, from end of September.
Demands
Full sun or shade; loses its typical leaf colour in the shade, frost hardy.
Soil
Dry to fresh.
