Habit
Dwarf shrub, 0.25-0.5 m tall, 0.3-0.35 m wide, prostrate to loosely upright, becoming taller; cut out old wood in spring.
Flowers
Bell-shaped or bulging, up to 1 cm long, in many variations from light crimson to pink in loose, upright racemes; June to October; conspicuously many flowers, persistent.
Fruits
Inconspicuous brown capsules.
Leaves
Evergreen, needle-like-linear, shiny dark green on top, whitish underneath.
Roots
Flat with fine roots living symbiotically with fungi, sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands
Sun to light shade, sensitive to heat, but likes warmth, not very frost hardy, for protected, cool, humid areas; protect from winter sun and winter winds from the east.
Soil
Fresh to moist, withers in dry soil, acidic to neutral, does not like chalk, all humic, well drained substrates.
