Habit
A dwarf shrub that forms carpets, 0.1-0.4 m tall, up to 0.75 m tall when old; twigs prostrate or arching upright; very slow-growing.
Flowers
Small, terminal heads, lively carmine-pink, April to May/June, pleasantly sweet fragrance; some individual flowers possible in summer.
Fruits
Yellowish, brownish berries, poisonous.
Leaves
Evergreen, small, linear, in clusters on ends of twigs.
Roots
Deep roots, far-reaching, somewhat sensitive; once established, the plant may not be transplanted again.
Demands
Full sun or light shade, likes warmth and tolerates heat, moderately frost hardy.
Soil
Dry to moderately fresh, on all well-drained mineral substrates.
Note
Shorten twigs that are too long and bare.
