Hydrangeaceae

(easern Asia)

There are 50 species of Deutzias, most of them indigenous to eastern Asia. At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, they were introduced to Europe. The French botanist Lemoine began cultivating the eccentrically growing wild varieties and produced trouble-free, decorative plants with large quantities of flowers. They flower later than the other spring blossoms.

Leaves
Usually ovoid or lanceolate, rough, pale green, yellowish in autumn, orange to bronze in October.
Demands
Light shade to sun, not demanding, adaptable, sensitive to heat and drought, frost hardy.
Soil
On all somewhat nutritious, not too dry soil.
Note
Cut back older, dense twigs to the ground occasionally, best after flowering in July.
