Normal shrub, 2.5-3 m wide and tall; rarely tall in these parts, twigs upright, vertical twig tips, funnel-shaped to whorled.
Flowers
Loosely hanging, reddish-green or yellow bells, in clusters during shooting, May; resemble the lily of the valley in shape.
Fruits
Inconspicuous.
Leaves
Lively fresh green, whorled in clusters at the tips of twigs, elliptical, conspicuous yellow in October, orange to fiery-red.
Roots
Shallow and intense, somewhat sensitive.
Demands
Light shade, sun only tolerated when soil is moist and air is humid; moderately frost hardy, occasional damage due to late frost, needs wind protection.
