Habit
Medium-size tree, 12-15 m tall, 7-10 wide, expansive, light crown.
Flowers
Bright blue-violet with white perianth, slender bells, like thimbles, up to 5 cm long, on long, loose, pyramidal panicles, up to 30 cm long, late winter to spring, shortly before leaves shoot.
Fruit
Woody, roundish, slightly wavy, broadly opening capsules, some 8 cm in diameter.
Leaves
Deciduous, broadly doubly pinnate, up to 45 cm long; pinnate leaflets simple, small, slenderly elliptical, soft hairs light to medium-green.
Demands
Sun, tolerating light frost, warm house, plants under glass need pruning back hard in late winter.
Natural habitat
Fresh to moist, loamy, nutritious, well drained soil.
