Cupressaceae

(China)

The origins of this juniper are not clear. The original seeds probably came from Mongolia and were probably a hybrid of Juniperus sabina and J. chinensis. As with the parents, this group of cultivars is impressive with its exceptionally robust varieties. J. media and J. sabina are both poisonous, have a pungent smell and are resistant to all extreme influences in urban areas.

Habit
Impressive, usually broadly extended large shrubs, 2-4 (5) m tall, 3-6 m wide, initially asymmetrically upward-reaching, often arranged in layers, often ascending diagonally to funnel-like, fast-growing.
Flowers
Varieties are either male or female, the latter with numerous small blue berries.
Leaves
Usually scaly, dull to blue green; pointed needles in the shade or after cutting.
Roots
Cordate roots, densely branched, well anchored; tolerates root covering with loose material, but sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands
Sun to light shade, thinner and with gaps in dark shade; tolerates heat, frost hardy; good for urban environments, wind resistant.
Soil
Dry to fresh; in all moderately nutritious, well-drained substrates.
Our tip
All varieties tolerate topiary and cutting into the old wood.
Hardiness
Zone 5a
