Habit
Small tree, 6-8 (10) m tall, 4-6 m wide, short stem with forked twigs, occasionally crooked stem, broadly round crown, umbrella-shaped when old; slow-growing, 10-20 cm a year.
Flowers
Conspicuous, yellow 15-30 cm long, loose panicles in August; one of the few summer-flowering trees; a notable rarity.
Fruits
Fruit capsules like blisters, initially light green to yellow, then brown, papery; persistent.
Leaves
Pinnate, reddish shoots; then medium-green; yellow to orange-brown from September.
Roots
Shallow, sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands
Sun, tolerates heat, sensitive to frost, shoots sensitive to late frost; not problematic in warm areas; tolerant of urban pollution, wind resistant.
Soil
Dry to fresh; only for well drained, chalky substrates; never on heavy loam/clay as frost damage is increased.
