Habit
Broadly conical large tree, 25-30 m tall, 8-10 m wide; branches horizontal, not arching upright, lateral twigs conspicuous cinnamon red, hanging; strong-growing, 50-80 cm a year.
Flowers
Monoecious, female flowers as cones, red, April, male in clusters, yellow.
Fruits
Up to 3 cm long, broadly ovoid cones, remain several years on the tree.
Leaves
Deciduous, like needles, in clusters; early shoots in April, pale blue-green, later dull green, bright golden yellow in autumn, November.
Roots
Deep roots.
Demands
Sun, cool, humid areas, sensitive to heat and drought, frost hardy; wind resistant.
Soil
Fresh to moist, in somewhat nutritious, not too light soil.
Our tip
L. kaempferi tolerates cutting for hedging. Cutting date: June to July.
