Ledum palustre

Small shrub, 0.5-1 m tall and wide, arching-upright twigs, slow-growing.

In many umbels, white, May to June, aromatic.

Inconspicuous brownish capsules.

Evergreen, linear, shiny dark green on top, crimson in winter; rust-red underneath to grey tomentose; aromatic; slightly poisonous.

Shallow, tolerates floods, sensitive to soil compaction.

Sunny in cold areas, otherwise shady to semi-shady; prefers cool and extremely humid areas, usually frost hardy, sensitive to wind.

Fresh to damp; very acidic to moderately acidic; avoids chalk, likes peat, bog or sandy-humic substrates.
