Leaves
Evergreen, linear, shiny dark green on top, crimson in winter; rust-red underneath to grey tomentose; aromatic; slightly poisonous.
Roots
Shallow, tolerates floods, sensitive to soil compaction.
Demands
Sunny in cold areas, otherwise shady to semi-shady; prefers cool and extremely humid areas, usually frost hardy, sensitive to wind.
Soil
Fresh to damp; very acidic to moderately acidic; avoids chalk, likes peat, bog or sandy-humic substrates.
