Fabaceae (Leguminosae)

(eastern Asia)

Habit
Expanded to draping, overhanging small or normal shrub, often only a semi-shrub, 1 m tall, in favourable areas shoots hanging up to 3 m, medium to fast-growing.
Flowers
Strong crimson; September to October; pretty, luxurious autumn flowers; no fruits or rarely in our region.
Leaves
In threes, like clover, green or bluish green, pale yellow in autumn.
Roots
Shallow, collect nitrogen.
Demands
Only full sun, resistant to heat, needs warmth, sensitive to frost, often freezing back to the ground; good for urban areas, sensitive to wind.
Soil
Dry to fresh, not too nutritious substrates, sandy to sandy-loamy; acidic to neutral; suffers from high chalk content, leaves then a sickly yellow.
Note
Cut frequent frost damage back yearly to the ground as the shrub has flowers on year-old wood.
