Habit

Usually a small shrub, 1-2 m tall and wide, densely bushy, occasionally trained as a miniature.

Flowers

Cream-white, dense panicles, summer, pungent.

Fruits

Round, black berries, poisonous.

Leaves

Evergreen, semi-evergreen in less favourable areas, small, elliptical, dark to black-green on top, pale light green underneath.

Demands

Sun to light shade, tolerates heat, needs warmth, only in the open in temperate areas, not very frost hardy, cold house.

Soil

Moderately dry to moist, slightly acidic to very alkaline; well-drained substrates.
