Habit
Large shrub or small tree, 3-6 m tall, 3 to 8 m wide, broad crown, umbrella-shaped when old, slow-growing, 20-25 cm a year.
Flowers
Profuse with masses of flowers, light purple-pink on the outside, cream-white inside, almost star-shaped flowers, before leaves shoot in mid-April, pleasant fragrance.
Fruits
Like cucumbers, with red seeds, slightly poisonous.
Leaves
Reverse ovoid, green, yellowish brown in autumn.
Roots
Fleshy, extended, few twigs, sensitive to mechanical injuries.
Demands
Sun to light shade, likes warmth, usually frost hardy, sensitive to late frost in cold areas, likes high humidity.
Soil
Moist to fresh; acidic to moderately alkaline; humic, well drained substrates.
