Habit
Medium-size, bamboo-like shrub, 2-2.5 m tall, 1.5 m wide, stiff, upright, few twigs, long shoots, slow-growing.
Flowers
Small, white star-shaped, up to 30 cm long upright, terminal panicles, summer.
Fruit
Numerous, round, red, shiny berries, 8 mm, persistent through winter.
Leaves
Evergreen, sometimes semi-evergreen, pinnate in threes, up to 90 cm long, pink, red and bronze when shooting, later light green, crimson-red in autumn.
Demands
Full sun to semi-shade, protected, somewhat frost hardy, cold house, takes well to cutting, needs wind protection.
Natural habitat
Fresh to moist, well drained, acidic soil. Not chalky water.
Our tip
Even though Nandina works best as a free-standing solitary, plant in loose groups of two to three to promote fruit production.
