Bizarre, twisted and asymmetrical large shrub or small tree, 4-6 (8) m tall, 3-4 m wide; short or crooked stem; twigs fanned out, slow-growing here.

Ovoid, only 1-2 cm long, wavy on the margins, shiny green; yellow in autumn; leaves have resinous, grapefruity scent.

Cordate roots, sensitive to soil compaction.

Sun to light shade, for mild but cool, humid areas, moderately frost hardy; only of limited use in urban areas; needs wind protection.

Fresh to moist; on well drained, sandy-loamy to loamy soil, acidic to neutral.
