Habit
Medium-size tree, 10-15 m tall, 8-12 m wide; initially conical to ovoid, gradually with round crown; loose, slow-growing, 20-40 cm a year.
Flowers
Monoecious, green females, yellow male catkins, some 10 cm long, hanging loosely, before or while leaves shoot; end of March to May.
Fruits
Syncarpy like hops, brownish orange, like cones.
Leaves
Like the common hornbeam, elliptical, pale green, light yellow in autumn, end of September.
Demands
Sunny to slightly shady; likes warmth, frost hardy; tolerant of urban pollution.
Soil
Dry to fresh, moderately acidic to alkaline; all nutritious garden soil, best when well drained, not growing well on heavy soil.
