Habit
Small shrub, 1-2 m tall and wide; loosely upright, asymmetrical with few twigs, slow-growing.
Flowers
Conspicuously large individual flowers, some single, some very double, up to 20-25 cm wide; usually white to light pink with basal spots that are a deep, dark to black-violet, May to June; slightly fragrant.
Leaves
Pinnate, early bronze shoots, some already at end of May, later pale green, bluish underneath; inconspicuous yellow in autumn.
Demands
Sun to light shade, likes warmth, usually frost hardy, but sensitive to late frost; needs wind protection.
Soil
Not too dry, better fresh to moist, flowers withering quickly when dry; acidic to alkaline, all humic, well drained substrates.
