The varieties of Parthenocissus that form tendrils without suckers belong to the species P. inserta and are thus trellis climbers; only the varieties that develop tendrils with adhesive pads that are truly self-clinging belong to P. quinquefolia.
Habit
With adhesive pads/self-clinging, 10-15 m tall, 1-2 m wide, hardly covering surfaces, quite clearly vertically extended; medium to fast-growing, 60-90 (120) cm.
Flowers
Inconspicuous, green-white panicles, June to July.
Fruits
Pea-size berries, black with a blue wax coating, from September.
Leaves
Palmate, large, in fives, elongated leaflets; scarlet in autumn, yellow in the shade; turning colours early, end of August to beginning of September.
Demands
Sun to shade, tolerates heat, likes warmth, frost hardy, resistant to wind.
Soil
Moderately dry to fresh, not demanding but robust, on all somewhat nutritious soil, moderately tolerant of salt.
