Quercus cerris

Large tree, 20-25 (30) m tall, 8-15 m wide; initially loose conical, gradually domed, rarely round crown, straight leader; branches diagonally upright, lateral twigs extended or slightly overhanging; slow-growing, 30 cm a year.

10-15 cm long, coarsely toothed, somewhat leathery, pale dark green, late shoots, autumn colours yellow-brown, inconspicuous; foliage persistent into March, brown.

Deep; not sensitive; paving possible to 1 m from stem.

Sun to light shade; extraordinarily tolerant of heat, likes warmth; moderately frost hardy; not demanding; resistant to urban pollution, absolutely wind resistant.

On all dry to fresh, slightly acidic to very alkaline substrates; the more chalk in the soil, the more droughts are tolerated; heavy soil is possible, but increases frost damage and slows growth; somewhat tolerant of salt.
