Fagaceae

(eastern North America)

Habit
Conical, medium-size to large tree, 15-20 (25) m tall, 8-12 (15) m wide; branches and twigs diagonally rising or horizontal, hardly overhanging; the first 20 years medium to strong-growing, 20-50 cm a year, later very slow, only 10-15 cm.
Leaves
Large leaves, broad-elliptical, deeply lobed, late shoots; shiny medium green, leathery; brilliant, scarlet from September; foliage persistent when brown.
Roots
Flat, main roots near the surface, lifting pavements; sensitive to soil compaction and paving.
Demands
Sun, avoid shade; likes warmth, frost hardy; good for urban areas, wind resistant.
Soil
Moderately dry to moist areas; acidic to slightly alkaline; high chalk content leads to chlorosis; on all well drained substrates, even poor ones.
