Quercus frainetto

A impressive large tree; 20-30 m tall, 10-15 (20) m wide; broadly extended round crown, usually short stem with main branches starting low on the stem; twigs horizontal, lilting a bit; medium to strong-growing, in the first 10-20 years 30-40 cm a year, later 10-20 cm.

Ornamental, deeply lobed, some 15 cm long, elliptical, dull or shiny dark green, somewhat leathery; autumn colours in November, yellow-brown; foliage occasionally persistent.

Deep, not sensitive, tolerates paving up to 1m from stem.

Sun; tolerates heat and likes warmth; usually frost hardy; good for urban areas, wind resistant.

Moderately dry to fresh; slightly acidic to very alkaline; sandy-loamy or loamy, somewhat nutritious soil; avoids heavy soil where it does not grow well.
