Habit
Large tree, 30-35 (40) m tall and 15-25 m wide, initially conical, then with asymmetrical and loosely round crown; main stem usually short; branches diagonally rising; twigs asymmetrical, lilting in the lower crown region; initially slow-growing, the first five years ca. 20 cm, later 30-40 cm a year.
Leaves
Obovate to elliptical, late shoots; medium green; autumn colours golden green or yellow-brown, foliage partially through winter.
Roots
Deep to cordate, sensitive to sinking ground water.
Demands
Sun to light shade; likes warmth, frost hardy, good for urban areas; wind resistant.
Soil
Dry to moist, not demanding, robust; on all nutritious substrates; moderately tolerant of salt.
Note
Takes well to cutting.
