Habit
Loose, impressive large tree, 15-25 (40) m tall, 6-10 m wide, broadly conical when young, then increasingly asymmetrical and overhanging; branches diagonally ascending, twigs drooping; slow or medium-growing, 30-40 cm a year.
Fruits
Cylindrical cones on the twigs, falling apart when ripe.
Leaves
Clusters on short shoots, single on long ones; intense bluish to greyish green, rigid, somewhat prickly; conspicuous appearance; needles freeze in harsh winters, but are completely replaced in the following spring.
Roots
Cordate to deep roots.
Demands
Sun, heat resistant, usually frost hardy; protected areas favourable; good for urban environments, tolerates wind.
Soil
Usually dry to fresh, tolerates drought, slightly acidic to alkaline; well-drained, nutritious, sandy-loamy, never heavy, damp-stagnant substrates.
Native habitat
In the high altitudes of the Atlas Mountains, Cedrus atlantica is found alongside evergreens such as varieties of Cistus, Daphne, Ilex, Juniperus and Viburnum. The flower carpets of spring are especially conspicuous and feel at home in the root system of the cedars, especially bulbous plants such as varieties of Allium, Crocus, Scilla and Tulipa. Later, varieties of Geum, Paeonia and Primula as well as numerous blue Festucas.
